As an undergraduate, she attended Columbia University in New York City, and earned her bachelor's degree in Psychology. She went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from New York University, and later worked on the university's faculty for fourteen years.〔 She taught in the Department of Educational Foundations and Counseling Programs at Hunter College until 1998.〔Haugen, David M.
